International Niche Business Innovations in the Forest Industry of South-Eastern Finland

Finnish forest industry is in a challenging situation. Many production sites have been shut down and more is expected to go. Most of the industry's investments are focusing on the new market areas where strong motivators are cheaper labor and raw material costs.

In spite of all, the industry is eager to have business in Finland also in the future. Finland has valuable wood and forests resources and a long history in this specific field of know-how. A crucial question is how new products and future successes are to be seized?

This project concentrates on finding new niche business opportunities with the main aim to create new business in the forest industry outside the current mainstream pulp and paper production. The research focus is in innovative SMEs and the inter-industry cooperation.
